Application Requirements

  • Applicants must be pursuing infant domestic adoption. 
  • Applicants must have a completed home study. *The home study submitted must be a final, approved copy including all necessary signatures and uploaded as one PDF smaller than 12 MB in size. Home study must be approved through November 2018. We will not accept emailed, mailed or faxed copies. 
  • Applicants must be unable to have (or have any more) biological children. **We will not request any type of medical records nor do we need an official infertility diagnosis. A simple, informal explanation such as "we tried fertility treatments but they have failed", or "we decided to pursue adoption instead of fertility treatments", etc. are acceptable. 
  • ​Applicants with an annual income of $80,000 or less will be prioritized. 
  • Applicants must be legally married for a minimum of one year. Same-sex couples are welcome to apply. We do not accept single applicants at this time.  
  • Applicants must be in the phase of waiting to be matched OR matched with baby due after the grant is awarded.***Due to charitable restrictions, Mighty Families by Adoption can not reimburse families who have already had a placement of a child.
  • Applicants must permanently reside within the 50 United States.

The next grant will be awarded in May 2020. Our applications only has five simple questions to answer in addition to a place to upload your completed home study. The submitted home study document must be completed, approved, include all necessary signatures, and be approved through May 2020. It must be submitted as one PDF file under 12 MB in size. We will not accept emailed, faxed, or mailed applications. Once you submit the application, you'll receive a confirmation email.  

All applications will be reviewed and discussed among our Selection Advisory Committee and the awarded family will be determined the first week of November. We plan to announce the awarded family in mid-November. Make sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for those updates.

All applicants will be notified and awarded families will be announced via email no more than four weeks after the deadline.

Awarded Families

Awarded families will be notified by phone. All other applicants will be notified via email. 
​Awarded families will receive up to $20,000 in direct expenses related to the adoption and can include agency fees and attorney fees.
All funds will be paid directly to your adoption organizations. ​
​Awarded families must agree to share photos and have their first names published to this website and our Facebook page and Instagram page.

The Douglas County Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3), in Lawrence, KS is hosting our application form and process on Mighty Families by Adoption page on its website. We will accept 75 applications only! You will be instructed to create an account on the Mighty Families by Adoption page on the DCCF site then proceed to the Mighty Families by Adoption application form. For your convenience, you will be able to exit out and re-enter using your login during the application process. Once you have submitted your application, please watch your email for messages from the Douglas County Community Foundation (Lori Trenholm) about the status of your application or if further information is required. Once complete, you will receive a confirmation that your application has been received. Your confidential application will be hosted on a secure server and will only be accessed by authorized personnel. All applicants will be notified by Mighty Families by Adoption via email once awarded families have been chosen. This grant is 100% funded by the Waller Family.

Additional Details

Mighty Families by Adoption conducts business without discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability or national origin. Mighty Families by Adoption will not provide funds to families who are self-matched (matched without an agency or attorney involved). Families who have already adopted or pending finalization are not eligible to apply. Any fundraising efforts must be disclosed in application. Failure to disclose will eliminate eligibility. We accept the risk of a failed match and awarded family will not to liable for any funds used up to that point. We happily accept same-sex couple applicants with legal documentation of marriage of 1 year or more. We will not consider single applicants at this time. We will not consider international adoptions, foster care expenses, kinship adoptions, or adoption of an older child. Mighty Families by Adoption will not provide funds to cover expenses such as travel, food, lodging, or baby products. Applicants who are not awarded are welcome to apply again. Awarded families are not allowed to apply again. Persons related to the Mighty Families by Adoption Founders, Selection Advisory Committee Members, or Douglas County Community Foundation staff or Board Members are not eligible to apply.  Awarded family must use all funds within one year of accepting the award. Applying families must have a completed home study and waiting to be matched or matched. Due to charitable restrictions, Mighty Families by Adoption can not reimburse families who have already adopted or have their baby home and therefore those families are ineligible to apply.
